Janja criticizes the very masculine STF; Lula only nominated men – 03/04/2024 – Power

The first lady, Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, said this Monday (4) that she hopes that the STF (Supreme Federal Court) will be a space that can be occupied by more women.

In his third term, President Lula (PT) appointed two men to the Supreme Court: Cristiano Zanin, who advocated for the PT member in Lava Jato cases, and Flávio Dino, former Minister of Justice.

By choosing Dino, Lula reduced female participation in the STF to just one woman, Minister Cármen Lúcia — appointed by the PT member in his first term.

Janja made the statement at an event that officially launched the transversal women’s agenda in the 2024-2027 Multi-Year Plan. Ministers from the PT government and Cármen Lúcia, today the only woman among the 11 members of the STF, also participated in the ceremony.

“Every time I arrive at an event at the Supreme Court, I go straight to her [Cármen Lúcia]. Because I always go into that room and it’s a very masculine room and that bothers me a lot, and then I always look for Minister Cármen there. I really hope it’s a very difficult space, but I hope that soon that space will also be a space for more women”, stated Janja at the beginning of her speech at the event.

Since the beginning of 2023, the president has been under pressure for the unprecedented appointment of a minister to the Supreme Court, with the aim of keeping Rosa’s seat with a woman — which did not happen.

There were also calls for Lula to choose a black woman, which would be unprecedented in the court’s history.

Lula, however, did not give in to the appeals, just as he did in his first nomination, when he chose Zanin, whom he called a friend.

Before deciding on Dino’s name, the president had already said that gender and color would not be criteria for his decision.

As a result, female representation on the supreme court stands at 9%, one of the worst in Latin America.
