Jail for military personnel is difficult after a decade of agreements – 09/23/2023 – Vinicius Torres Freire

Anyone concerned about the punishment of Bolsonarism and military partners in the coup project should remember the country’s institutional degradation in the last decade, at least. What is the possibility of fair trials, convictions and a fundamental reform of the Armed Forces?

The military command had been involved in some kind of intervention project since 2018, as was evident with Villas Boas’ attack on the Supreme Court and Lula. Afterwards, generals and senior officers went to the Bolsonaro government to take advantage of the rich mouth and advise the coup. In the last week, more strong clues appeared that some of the active general officers were discussing a coup and others were watching everything without reporting the crime, a fundamental malfeasance.

A serious attempt to eradicate putschism in the Armed Forces would require a process similar to what was done in Argentina and Chile, albeit on a different scale, in addition to changing behavior, promotions and training. The most likely, however, is that an arrangement will occur in which goats will be sacrificed and that an agreement will leave everything as it fundamentally is. This is a summary of the arrangements that saved the rotten ones evidenced in the last decade.

The election of Jair Bolsonaro was also the result of the desire to end the PT and leftism in general, a movement that began systematically in 2013 and gained momentum from 2014, on several fronts and for various reasons and interests. PT corruption or, more relevantly, those that the party facilitated (Petrobras, construction companies) were just one of these reasons, often just a pretext.

The campaign by the conservative-negotiating Congress to send more and have more money (Eduardo Cunha and similar) was another reason, a movement by the parliamentary body that remains strong and shaken. Among these causes are the inability of the right to win the presidential elections, as well as the revived Udenism of the professional upper middle classes, as in Lava Jato.

Very important, one must include in this list the desire of certain social groups to finally have a direct and assumed representative in power or to reach the top themselves (the evangelical party, but not evangelicals in general; the agro-ogre; military; enemies human diversity and civilization, etc.). The economic elite, including intellectuals, also wanted to get rid of the PT, not just because of the mess it caused in the 2015-16 disaster.

The aggressive and extensive politicization of the Justice system (judges and prosecutors) was mitigated, but institutionalized. There are benches in the Supreme Court and monoautocratic decisions continue, so to speak, to give a brief example. In fact, attenuated degradation becomes institutionalized throughout the entire political system.

The beneficiaries of parliamentary corruption came to power with Michel Temer and Bolsonaro. Now they dominate Congress. The talk of corruption and reforms was, to a large extent, false.

Bolsonaro’s lackey, Lieutenant Colonel Cid, accused at least one admiral of coup plotting. It caused a sensation. And?

Cid, a former candidate for generalship, is a common conman, forger, facilitator of smuggling, who studied coup methods at the Army’s postgraduate school. If he doesn’t have any proof, his word is worth even less, especially because he works hard to escape the hard way. It could be one of the few heads that the Armed Forces will offer in exchange for “amnesty” for the coup. It will be cheap.

Where is the great process to sweep away authoritarianism? It is quite possible that any more of this superficial indignation will end in almost nothing. That is, that a new agreement incorporates the military coup threat into the devastated landscape of institutions.
