Itamaraty prepares response to EU rejecting environmental sanctions – 06/14/2023 – Panel

Itamaraty intends to deliver by July a response to the additional document presented by the European Union with new environmental requirements for the signing of the agreement with Mercosur.

The additional term, called “side letter”, proposes to transform environmental commitments made voluntarily in the first wording of the proposal into obligations. Currently, the text is being analyzed by the technical areas of the ministries involved in the discussion.

The Brazilian response should bring disagreement with the change and the assessment that, if sanctions are applied, they should apply to both sides, and not just to the South American countries.

The topic was discussed between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a meeting last Monday (12).

During the joint statement, Lula criticized the extra environmental requirement that Europeans want in the agreement with Mercosur and said that the premise of the negotiations should not be “distrust and sanction”.
