The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Friday (17) the diplomat Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado as an extraordinary ambassador for Climate Change. The position was recreated by the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Between 2007 and 2010, it was occupied by Ambassador Sergio Barbosa Serra.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Dilma Rousseff’s government, Figueiredo will coordinate Brazil’s candidacy to host the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP 30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held in 2025, informed Agência Brasil.

Figueiredo has been a career diplomat since 1980. He was Brazil’s permanent representative to the United Nations and headed the Brazilian embassies in Qatar, Portugal and the United States. In the area of ​​climate change, he held the positions of head of the Division of Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development (2002-2004), director of the Department of the Environment and Special Issues (2005-2011) and Deputy Secretary-General for the Environment, Energy, Science and Technology (2011-2013).

On January 1, Itamaraty created the Secretariat for Climate, Energy and the Environment, responsible for formulating and coordinating Brazilian positions in international negotiations on climate change.
