Itaipu will pay for the conclusion of works on the Unila campus – 07/04/2023 – Panel

Itaipu Binacional will finance the conclusion of works on the Niemeyer campus of Unila (Federal University of Latin American Integration), which have been at a standstill for almost a decade, in Foz do Iguaçu (PR).

A technical cooperation agreement between the federal government, Unila and the hydroelectric plant for the resumption of works will be signed this Tuesday (4th), and will be valid for five years. The value of the work is R$ 600 million, according to Itaipu’s calculation.

Part of the work on the university campus was lifted, but in 2014 the structure was abandoned. It is not yet known whether the skeleton already built can still be used.

Unila says that 40% of the first phase of the work (which included a classroom building, an administrative building and a university restaurant) has been completed. The work is in an area of ​​almost 380 thousand square meters donated by Itaipu Binacional.

The idea of ​​Unila emerged at the beginning of President Lula’s (PT) second term, in 2007, as a policy of integration between Mercosur countries. The first classes began to be offered in 2010.

At the same time, the campus was being built, a project that belonged to Oscar Niemeyer. The architect, who died in 2012, delivered the project in 2008. Currently, Unila is spread over rented premises.

The construction of the Unila campus was divided into two stages. In June 2011, a contract worth almost R$ 240 million was signed for the execution of the first stage of the work with Consórcio Mendes Junior – Schahin. The bidding procedure for the second stage was not even opened.

“Unila has never stopped looking for solutions for the paralyzed work. Since 2014, it has repeatedly sought the Ministry of Education to obtain funds to complete the construction. It was not answered. In October 2017, the MEC indicated that it would not be It was possible to provide resources because it was a large-scale work, incompatible with the portfolio’s federal budget.

In March, when he was in Foz, President Lula spoke about the matter. “I was very sad when I passed by helicopter now and it looks abandoned. After I left the Presidency, little has been done”, he said.
