“It is necessary to prevent attacks against civilization”, says Bolsonaro’s accusation

The trial of the action that could make former president Jair Bolsonaro ineligible began this Thursday (22) with the reading of the report and the oral arguments of the prosecution and defense lawyers. Walber Agra, a lawyer for the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), said the aim of the prosecution is “to prevent our civilization from being attacked again by these hordes”, in reference to Bolsonaro supporters involved in the January 8 acts.

The PDT’s lawyer began by attacking the idea that the action was not based on facts and accused those who expressed this opinion of “blindness”. “There are no facts? There is only one meeting? Are we going to enter a stage of collective blindness again? How come there are no facts? There was a meeting with a clear deviation of purpose to demoralize the institutions”, he said.

Still in line with expressing the objectivity of the accusations, Agra said that he did not try to “impose responsibility for a set of works”. “Each fact here, by itself, represents an inexcusable burden for democracy. It is not just a meeting of ambassadors. It is a plurality of facts.”

Among these facts, the lawyer included the use of TV Brasil to cast suspicion on the Brazilian electoral system. In addition, he accused Bolsonaro of participating in an alleged attempted coup d’état, an accusation justified by the draft of the coup found in the home of former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres. He called it “an enthronement of chaos to conquer our institutions, to undermine and injure the democratic regime”. Agra said the draft “is just the shameful apex of disregard for the public good.”

Agra closed his speech by stating that it is necessary to “get out of the blindness to which we are condemned” and that “we cannot fall into barbarism”.
