Ipec: 7 out of 10 have already experienced an extreme event in Brazil – 12/03/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

An unprecedented survey carried out by Ipec (Intelligence in Research and Strategic Consulting) at the request of the Pólis Institute reveals that 7 in 10 Brazilians have already experienced at least one extreme event linked to climate change.

Among the episodes suffered most cited by interviewees are very heavy rains (20%), drought and water shortages (20%), floods, floods and floods (18%), extreme temperatures (10%), blackouts (7%), cyclones and wind storms (6%) and bushfires and fires (5%).

Ipec interviewed 2,000 people aged 16 or over between the 22nd and 26th of July this year. The research commissioned by the Pólis Institute, with support from the Climate and Society Institute, has a margin of error of two percentage points, plus or minus, and a confidence index of 95%.

The survey shows that extreme temperatures — whether very cold or very hot — are the occurrences most associated by the population (44%) with the climate crisis. In practical terms, however, the lack of water and drought are the events that cause most concern, mentioned by 34% of respondents.

Next, fears are cited regarding flooding, floods and floods (23%), fires and burnings (18%) and heavy rain (17%). Concern about the advent of extreme heat or cold comes in fifth place, being feared by 16% of those interviewed.

Still according to the research, seizures vary according to the class and color of the interviewees. Floods, floods and floods are of greater concern to classes D and E, being indicated by 25% of respondents from these segments, than classes A and B (19%). The national average is 23%.

The black population, in turn, is more concerned (25%) about these same incidents than the white population (21%).

For researchers who are part of Pólis, the responses also indicate that the Brazilian population supports investment in renewable energy sources to combat climate change.

Of the total respondents, 84% say they are concerned about the future and support investment in these types of investment. For 57%, solar energy should be prioritized in terms of public investments. Water sources (14%) and wind (13%) are mentioned next.

On the other hand, respondents state that oil (73%), coal (72%) and fossil gas (67%) are the categories that most contribute to the worsening of climate change.

“The research indicates, in an unprecedented way, that there is a tendency for an increasingly higher political cost if the path of government decisions continues to be investment in non-renewable sources”, says the executive director of the Pólis Institute, Henrique Frota.

“The numbers show that Brazilians want priority investment in renewable sources and understand this decision as fundamental to combating climate change”, adds Frota.
