Jair Bolsonaro left a trail of devastation. The demolition of public policies, negligence as a method of government, the encouragement of savagery, the corrosion of democracy and institutional poisoning were products of his cycle in power. The invoice for the damages arrives for the ex-president in installments.

Bolsonaro suffered three major defeats in eight months. The failure in the election was the first and the most humiliating, since voting is one of the main pillars of any populist. The second was the frustration of the coup plan that the captain and his more radical allies dreamed of.

The ineligibility declared by the TSE is added to the package. Blocks Bolsonaro’s return to power before 2030 and limits, in the medium term, his access to instruments to recover from other setbacks.

The three failures took place in forums that the former president tried to manipulate. Bolsonaro broke into government coffers to improve his chances at the polls and abused power to delegitimize the electoral process; he misrepresented the role of the Armed Forces to feed the fantasy of the coup; and led a campaign to disqualify the Electoral Justice.

The bad news is that even though he didn’t get what he wanted, he left his mark. He conquered a large and solid electorate (with a part sympathetic to authoritarian theses), gave impetus to coup-mongering military factions and crystallized distrust of the courts.

This inheritance creates conditions for Bolsonarism to continue to be cultivated, even if the chief cannot represent it at the polls. From now on, the ex-president’s power to fertilize the ground just as an electoral cable and the control he will exercise over an inevitable succession process will be tested.

Bolsonaro’s account is not yet closed. In addition to the triple defeat, the former president faces a queue of inquiries and lawsuits. Without candidacy, he has one less megaphone to victimize himself. Without office, he loses the protection of prosecutors and friendly congressmen.
