Investment of R$2 million from the Federal Government strengthens the PAA with indigenous communities in Amapá – News of Brazil

The Federal Government allocated resources in an unprecedented way to strengthen the logistical capacity of indigenous populations participating in the Food Acquisition Program (PAA). The Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (OMG) signed partnerships with Funai and PAA management bodies in 14 states for the purchase of vehicles, vessels and equipment. The investment is around R$40 million.

In Amapá, more than R$ 2 million in federal resources will be transferred to the Institute of Extension, Assistance and Rural Development, which, added to the state’s counterpart value, will be applied to the acquisition of two pickup trucks, with 4×4 traction, two cargo trucks and three aluminum boats with engines.

The means of transport will guarantee the flow of production made by indigenous people and the delivery of food to other members of this population, most of whom live in regions that are difficult to access. The intention is to unite both ends: communities that provide and communities that receive food. The resources are transferred through agreements with the states, signed at the end of December and published in this first week of 2024 in the Official Gazette of the Union.

To make the initiative effective, the National Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Security (Sesan) of the MDS counted on the partnership of the states to map the demands and mobilize indigenous populations to participate in the PAA. “It is a commitment of the Federal Government to promote food and nutritional security and this action is a practical example of this. In this sense, we understand that our actions also need to strengthen the work of the program’s executors”said Lilian Rahal, head of Sesan.

Considering that fresh food needs to reach its destination regularly and in suitable conditions for consumption, the initiative aims to further qualify PAA’s action among those who need it most. “We want food purchased from family farming and indigenous people themselves, through the PAA, to reach indigenous families who need it most”added Lilian Rahal.

In total, 104 vehicles will be purchased, including trucks, pickup trucks, utility vehicles and pickup trucks with different specifications. 46 vessels will also be purchased, including boats and speedboats. The following states were covered: Bahia; Ceará; Maranhão; Pernambuco; Piauí and Rio Grande do Norte (Northeast); Acre; Amapá; Amazon; For; Roraima and Tocantins (North); Santa Catarina (South) and Mato Grosso do Sul (Central-West).
