Investigation on 8/1 advances, but spares military – 02/07/2023 – Politics

A month after the coup attacks on the headquarters of the three Powers, the civil investigation bodies advanced on part of the vandals involved in the depredations, politicians pointed out as omissive and members of the Military Police of the Federal District, but nothing so far has spilled over members of the Armed Forces .

Since January 8, at least 1,420 people have been arrested in the act or during operations launched by the Federal Police.

The absence of military personnel among the targets of accusations made by the Public Ministry or even of operations launched by the PF occurs amid repeated promises that there will be no impunity and that those responsible will pay for omissions.

Part of the ongoing investigations sees the maintenance of the coup camp in front of the headquarters of the Army in Brasília as one of the points that facilitated the attacks on January 8th.

In December, the Army suspended at least two joint operations with the Government of the Federal District to remove tents and facilities from the Bolsonarist camp.

On the night of the attacks, the Army even prevented the Military Police from entering to arrest the coup plotters. The demobilization of the camp and prison took place only the next day, when many had already left the place.

The tension between the military and the government caused by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) lack of confidence in the way the Armed Forces acted during the attacks resulted in the fall, on January 21, of the Army commander, General Júlio Cesar de Arruda .

As shown to Sheeta report held by the Ministry of Justice identified at least eight active-duty military personnel assigned to the Presidency of the Republic during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government who attended events at the coup camp last year.

One of them, Ronaldo Ribeiro Travassos, from the Navy, even recorded videos and posted audios in a group stating that Lula would not take office on January 1st and defending the murder of PT voters.

Even with these situations being public knowledge, no soldier, so far, is among the 653 denounced by the Attorney General’s Office or on the list of 20 prisoners and targets of the 37 search and seizure warrants carried out in the five phases of the operation Lesa Pátria , created by the Federal Police to investigate all those involved in anti-democratic attacks.

Members of the Army, Navy and Air Force are also not included in the list of 134 people targeted by the blockade of R$ 20.7 million requested by the AGU (Attorney General of the Union).

Military personnel only appear, so far, in the eight preliminary investigations opened in the military sphere, conducted by the Military Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Three investigations investigate possible actions by general officers in relation to the acts, the possible omission of the Armed Forces regarding the invasions and, according to the MPM (Ministério Público Militar), the “alleged aid of Army soldiers in the escape of demonstrators after participating in acts undemocratic”.

One of them targets the former commander of the Presidential Guard Battalion Jorge Paulo Fernandes da Hora and military police during the invasion of the Planalto Palace.

The Army Command, in turn, opened three military police investigations to investigate possible crimes related to the vandals’ invasion.

There is, however, no complaint or precautionary measure taken against investigated, such as arrest, search or other steps.

The PGR (Attorney General’s Office), in that first month, informed the submission to the Supreme Court of complaints against 653 people until this Tuesday (7). No military is among the accused.

The most expressive volume of accusations formalized so far focused on people arrested by the police in the camp in front of the Army headquarters the morning after the attacks on the headquarters of the three Powers.

The group was framed in the crimes of criminal association and incitement to crime, for instigating the Armed Forces against the Powers.

The work at the PGR is in charge of a group coordinated by deputy prosecutor Carlos Frederico Santos, assigned to the mission by Augusto Aras.

Within the scope of the AGU, a series of actions were presented with the aim of seeking compensation from public coffers for the damage caused in the attacks.

The AGU has informed that, until now, this loss is estimated by the three Powers at R$ 20.7 million, but this value may still be exceeded. The people and companies prosecuted by the agency are suspected of financing the chartering of buses for coup acts and for participating in the depredation of public buildings.

The AGU’s requests have been accepted by the Federal Court. At least R$ 4.3 million in vehicles alone are already blocked. The Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, has stated that the body may file lawsuits for collective moral damages against the coup plotters.

In the PF, the five phases of the Lesa Pátria operation have already advanced on those involved in the depredation, on the omissive authorities and against the military police responsible for the security of the Esplanada.

In the last phase, on Tuesday (7), four police officers were arrested. Among them, Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime Barreto, then head of the Operational Department of the Military Police of the Federal District.

The colonel was the head of the sector responsible for drawing up the security plan in the federal capital to prevent coup attacks.

The PF is still processing investigations about the masterminds of the attacks and possible financiers of the coup plotters.
