International Olympic Committee announces inclusion of five sports for Los Angeles – News of Brazil
[ad_1]
The International Olympic Committee announced, this Friday (13), the inclusion of five new sports that will be part of the program for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. The biggest news is flag football, a sport similar to American football and practiced mainly in the United States.
Squash will also debut in the world’s main event in 2028. Lacrosse, in a reduced version (six athletes instead of ten), baseball/softball and cricket are the other sports covered.
Flag football has the support of the NFL, as it is an adaptation of American football. Instead of taking down opponents to end the play, players have to take off a type of tape located around their opponents’ waist.
One of the most practiced and watched sports around the world, especially in countries that were formerly English colonies, cricket is back on the Olympic program after more than 100 years.
At the same time as it has no tradition in any of the new sports, Brazil may lose some chances of medals for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Boxing, one of the main sources of medals for the country, could be removed from the program due to political problems and suspicion of corruption. The final decision will be made later.
