Monday, the 8th, will be one year since Bolsonaro supporters invaded Praça dos Três Poderes to declare war on the poor who saved Brazilian democracy in the 2022 presidential election.

On January 8, 2023, the foot soldiers of Bolsonarism defecated in the STF, stabbed a Portinari screen, tore up copies of the Constitution and vandalized the headquarters of the three Powers.

They did everything with the complacency of the police of Bolsonaro governor Ibaneis Rocha, whose public security secretary was Bolsonaro’s former justice minister, Anderson Torres.

January 8 was the climax of two months of coup unrest following Bolsonaro’s defeat. Roadblocks, camps in front of barracks, street conflicts on the eve of Lula’s diplomacy, an attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Eve, all of this had the same objective as the vandalism in Praça dos Três Poderes: to create a climate of chaos that served as a pretext for a military coup.

When the military didn’t show up, the privates were arrested.

But there are still a lot of people to arrest.

The January 8th vandals were not ordinary citizens in an explosion of radicalism: they were foot soldiers of an organized political movement with an extensive and well-funded disinformation network, its own parliamentary bench and headquarters in the Palácio do Planalto.

See, for example, the 32nd extraordinary meeting of the Transparency, Inspection and Control Commission in the National Congress, called and chaired by senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE). The 11th hour video of the session is available on YouTube.

It was an intensive for January 8th scammers. All the Bolsonarist lies about the election were presented as if they had not already been widely refuted. Throughout the session, retired judges Sebastião Coelho (4:14) and Ivan Sartori (4:30), in addition to deputy Filipe Barros (PL-PR) (7:27) called for the application of article 142, which, in the delusions of Ives Gandra, would authorize a military intervention. Representative Aline Sleutjes (PROS-PR) asked the Armed Forces to “do their duty” to prevent Lula from graduating (9:17). Deputy José Medeiros (PL-MT) informed that he had already filed a GLO request (7:35). At the end of the session, a citizen asked Girão himself to invoke article 142 (11:22). Girão ended the session saying that “There are colleagues in the Senate who are evaluating various possibilities.”

The intensity of the coup produced dedicated students. Among those who attended the session was George Washington de Souza. On Christmas Eve 2022, with a former advisor from Damares Alves’ ministry as an accomplice, George Washington tried to blow up Brasília airport.

If the parliamentarians who participated in the coup intensification can continue in Congress, I don’t understand why the January 8th vandals were expelled.

They are the same people, obeying the same boss: Jair Bolsonaro. Jair spent four years plotting coups instead of governing. When he refused to recognize Lula’s victory, he gave the password for the coup wave that culminated on January 8th.

Only when the leaders of the coup have been arrested, when their occasional allies have been expelled from public life, will our institutions have proven that they really deserve to be saved.
