Indonesia and Australia are in talks to submit a joint bid to host the 2034 World Cup despite the Asian Confederation’s support for Saudi Arabia, Indonesian Football Federation president Erick Thohir said.

After choosing Spain, Morocco and Portugal as hosts for the 2030 edition, FIFA opened applications for the 2034 edition, limited to the confederations of Asia and Oceania, to respect the rotation of continents.

Saudi Arabia, which already had the 2030 World Cup as its goal and has been investing heavily to establish itself in world football, confirmed its candidacy, receiving almost immediate support from the AFC.

With a deadline of October 31, 2023 to present proposals, Indonesia and Australia have accelerated an open dialogue since the last FIFA congress, in March, in Rwanda.

The joint candidacy of Moroccans, Spanish and Portuguese was the only one competing for the right to host the tournament.

“The FIFA Council unanimously agreed that the single bid of Morocco, Portugal and Spain will host the event in 2030 and [suas seleções] will automatically qualify based on the existing allocation of places,” FIFA said in a statement.
