The athlete “Mazinho” started training 11 years ago and has won medals and numerous participations in fighting events
Manaus (AM) – At 27 years old, Amazonian Walmar Pacheco, better known as “Mazinho” in the world of sport, has medals and numerous participations in fighting events. The athlete with down syndrome began training 11 years ago with the Brazilian Jiu-Jítsu team, led by master Márcio Pontes and a reference in the Alvorada neighborhood, Central-West Zone of Manaus.
For his family, his living condition was not an obstacle, on the contrary, it served as an impetus for him to develop and win many admirers.
“Mazinho still has difficulty speaking a few words, but since he started jiu-jitsu, he has made great progress physically and mentally. Today, he can actually pronounce a few words, which allows us to communicate. At the gym, he is the training star. Everyone likes him. The team has a great rapport with him and he feels at home there, thank God”, .
said his uncle, Airton Pacheco
After a period without training due to the pandemic and for personal reasons, Mazinho returned to the mat with a focus on preparing to participate in the Open Extreme Manaus. Among 19 MMA and Kickboxing fights scheduled for the event, two are aimed at social inclusion: Mazinho x Felipe Fúria and Haroldo Souza x Chico Preto.
At 66 years old, Haroldo is a wheelchair athlete, diagnosed with paralysis in the first days of his life. Today, alongside his coach, Luiz Guerreiro, he overcomes many challenges in sport and in the search for a better quality of life and is already looking forward to participating in the event for the first time.
“This opportunity is spectacular. Social inclusion is unparalleled. We are motivated to have real inclusion and little by little it has appeared. Luiz (coach) saw me capable of training”,
highlighted Haroldo.
For Luiz Guerreiro, including martial art in Haroldo’s life is gratifying. The athlete seeks to enjoy and learn a lot during training. Not to mention that his story inspires many people.
“I have always seen him very active, even in a wheelchair, making an effort to go out, doing other exercises, working out, for me, this is very rewarding as a coach. A few weeks ago he asked me if I would ever go to the rink and the answer came,”
said Guerreiro.
According to Marcelo Pontes, organizer of Open Extreme Manaus, in addition to promoting the meeting of renowned fighters in the state with younger fighters, the event seeks to strengthen social inclusion and enable people with disabilities to have the opportunity to showcase their talents.
“We always bring these fights during the program, so that both those who are there on the day and those who are watching online are impressed by the capacity of a PCD. Often, they just need one door open for others to open,”
highlighted.
