Indigenous deputy from Amapá gives a speech considered transphobic in a Chamber commission – News of Brazil

In an attempt to defend Deputy Dorinaldo Malafaia’s (PDT-AP) indigenous identity, Federal Deputy Silvia Waiãpi (PL-AP) made a transphobic speech during a session, this Tuesday (11), of the Amazon and Peoples Commission Origins and Traditionals of the Chamber of Deputies, which received the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara.
“You want me to accept someone who declares herself a woman, without being a woman, biologically male, I am obliged to accept it. But they don’t want to accept me said Waiãpi.
The statement responds to a previous speech by Deputy Malafaia about “fraud” by deputies about representativeness. “I regret that there is some kind of embarrassment when indigenous people are here taking a stand and reporting their position. We will fight any embezzlement that comes from any deputy who says he represents and does not represent”, Malafaia said.
Waiãpi also reminded the deputy about the determination of peoples. “The deputy forgets Convention 69, which establishes that anyone who declares himself indigenous is indigenous. We also have the self-determination of peoples,” he said.
Amidst the confusion, congresswoman Fernanda Melchiona (PSol-RS) asked for a matter of order regarding the crime of transphobia pronounced by Waiãpi. “The deputy has every right to speak in the lead time, but transphobia is a crime and we will not accept it in silence”shot. “No crime”he reiterated.
