Indigenous archer seeks unprecedented title for Amazonas in the Armed Forces World Cup

Armed Forces World Cup takes place from February 25th to 29th, in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh

Manaus (AM) – Gustavo dos Santos will represent Amazonas at the World Armed Forces Championship. The Amazon native has been an indigenous archer for more than 10 years and is looking for an unprecedented title for the state, in the international competition that takes place from the 25th to the 29th of February, in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh. The athlete has support from the State Government, through the State Sports Grant and the Amazonas Project at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Born in the Nova Cannã community, on the banks of the Cuieiras River, in the interior of Amazonas, Gustavo started the sport in 2014 as a result of a project in the region where he lived. The archer already has titles under his belt such as medalist at the 2018 Brazilian Championship, silver medalist at the 2018 South American Games in Bolivia, and won 4th place qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics.

Gustavo currently holds the position of 3rd sergeant in the Brazilian Air Force, achieving national ranking and classifying himself as the only Amazonian in the world armed forces.

“I’m going to compete in the main adult category, and I’m looking for the podium. It’s a very important competition and now it’s time to show that all the training was worth it, and be among the top three”, said the Amazon native, who has been an archery fan for over 10 years, and carries out his training at the Vila Olímpica de Manaus. .

“The financial support from the Bolsa Sport Estadual is used to maintain training and expenses for competitions. This incentive that we receive from the state is extremely important to compete at a high level and now I am aiming for the greatest result of reaching the Olympics”,

highlighted Gustavo dos Santos.

“Gustavo is an outstanding athlete who has followed a brilliant path towards the next Olympic cycle. It is Governor Wilson Lima’s determination that top athletes like him receive all the support to reach national and world levels in their sports”, said Jorge Oliveira, Secretary of State for Sports and Leisure (Sedel).
