Indication to create Specialized Center for autistic people is approved by the Manaus Chamber

Projects aimed at accessibility for obese students and encouraging sports also advanced this Monday (06)

Manaus (AM) – During the Ordinary Meeting of the Manaus City Council (CMM), the recommendation to create a Specialized Center to care for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) was approved this Monday (6). The president of the Chamber, councilor Caio André (Podemos), made it official and the nomination was forwarded to the State Government.

The application takes into account a survey of the number of autistic people in Amazonas, as according to data from the Autism Institute in Amazonas, the disorder affects more than 20 thousand people in the state.

“A center that allows this type of special service is extremely important. This indication is a request from many families who have been waiting for a long time, often having difficulties in dealing with people from this group and even having knowledge and access to the rights provided for by law”,

stated Caio André.

According to the indication, the absence of specialized professionals is the main difficulty faced by families, which contributes to delaying the diagnosis and complicating the treatment of the disorder. According to the institute, autism can be observed from one year of age onwards.

The document adds that Federal Law 12,764/2012, which establishes the National Policy for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder, has as one of its guidelines comprehensive attention to the needs of this public, aiming for early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care and access to medicines and nutrients.

Adapted seats

Still on the agenda of the Ordinary Meeting, the councilors unanimously approved a favorable opinion from the 4th Education Commission for Bill No. 197/2023 authored by Caio André, which provides for the obligation of adapted seats for obese students in municipal schools.

According to the project, the number of seats available in the rooms must correspond, at least, to the number of obese students enrolled and 5% of the total number of seats. The determination also specifies that the seats follow standards established by the Institute of Weights and Measures of Amazonas (Ipem-AM).

With the approval of the opinion, the PL will return for a 2nd discussion in the Adriano Jorge plenary before proceeding for sanction by the City of Manaus.

Exemption

Authored by the President of the House, Bill No. 145/2023 on exemption from registration fees for sporting events for athletes practicing jiu-jitsu registered in social projects was forwarded to a new committee.

The measure brings requirements such as athletes involved in competitions for a year and having participated in at least four competitions in the previous year. Those interested in the exemption must also submit a bi-monthly and semi-annual school attendance report.

The PL received a favorable opinion from the 2nd Constitution, Justice and Writing Committee (CCJR) and will go to the 3rd Finance, Economy and Budget Committee (CFEO).
