In the USA, Débora Menezes participates in a delegation that denounces ‘authoritarianism’ in Brazil

Group traveled to the United States this week to hold an agenda at the Chamber’s Human and Political Rights Committee

In a delegation of Brazilian parliamentarians, Amazonas state deputy Débora Menezes (PL-AM) traveled to Washington DC, capital of the United States, this week, to denounce the “scale of judicial authoritarianism occurring in Brazil” to the North American government and press .

The group is led by deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) and journalist Paulo Figueiredo. Initially, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) requested a hearing to criticize the ‘totalitarian system of the Brazilian Judiciary’, at the end of February, during the Conservative Political Action Conference. The invitation to participate was made by the Republican Party deputy and president of the commission, Christopher Smith.

“I am participating in the hearing of the Commission on Human and Political Rights. With determination and courage, we will make America and the world aware, together with several parliamentarians, of the threats to democracy, censorship and persecution in Brazil. We reaffirm our commitment to defending fundamental rights, Christian values ​​of family and freedom”,

commented the deputy.

After that, the complaint should take place during a hearing by the United States House Commission on Human and Political Rights, scheduled for this Tuesday (12), with the theme “Brazil: A Crisis of Democracy, Freedom and the Rule of Law?” . However, participation was vetoed by Democratic Party deputy and vice-president of the commission, Jim McGovern.

The attack on the judicial system occurred during a press conference, organized by deputy Christopher Smith. In a post on social media, the Amazonas deputy stated that the delegation denounced the “Brazilian dictatorship, the end of freedom of expression and the breach of the rule of law”. Still according to the parliamentarian, participation in the commission was “sabotaged by the left”.

When addressing the objectives and themes addressed by the delegation, Débora Menezes mentioned those accused of participating in the undemocratic act of January 8, 2023, declaring that there were “people unjustly arrested” and that there is a “dictatorship of the judiciary”.

Brazilian right-wing politicians participate in the group, including: André Fernandes (PL), Amália Barros (PL), Bia Kicis (PL), Gustavo Gayer (PL), Marcel van Hattem (Novo), Marcelo Moraes (PL), Mário Frias (PL), Messias Donato (Republicans), Paulo Bilinsky (PL), among others.

For sociologist, political scientist and lawyer, Carlos Santiago, Brazil is in its most democratic period, with fully functioning powers and no political parties in hiding, when analyzing the country’s history. “The press is free, there are periodic elections, but what is happening in Brazil today is a clash of narratives from left and right supporters”, he added.

“In a country where parliamentarians use their social networks to maintain freedom of expression, the tribunes of parliament to express their feelings, enter and leave the country at any time, even to speak ill of the country in other countries, there is no why say that we live in times of dictatorship, that the facts don’t add up”,

he said.

The political analyst pointed out the speeches of antagonistic ideologies, when the left accuses the right of staging a coup against democracy, containing investigations conducted by the Federal Police and the Judiciary. At the same time, the right believes that in Brazil there is, within the Judiciary, censorship and persecution, using national and international means to denounce.

“What Brazil needs is for the left and right to seek to improve the lives of Brazilians in the states, in the municipalities, to seek to use democracy well to improve the lives of the population, combat poverty, unemployment, violence. As long as there is no interest from everyone, we will continue to watch fights over narratives that do nothing to improve people’s lives”,
