Manaus (AM) – The management contract for the Amazon Biobusiness Center (CBA) will be signed this Tuesday (25), in Manaus, by the vice president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, and by the executive director of the Fundação Universitas de Estudos Amazônicos (FUEA), Elias Moraes de Araújo. The document will be valid for four years, and may be renewed at the discretion of the ministry, defined as the supervisory authority of the agreement signed between the federal government and the foundation.

The signing of the contract marks the beginning of a new phase for the CBA, formerly linked to the Manaus Free Trade Zone and now redesigned to acquire its own legal personality. With the change, recommended by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), the center will be able to raise private funds to leverage business made possible with products made from natural resources in the Amazon.

Installed in a complex with a constructed area of ​​12,000 square meters, the CBA aims to boost the economic and sustainable development of the Amazon region by encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship and the generation of sustainable businesses based on the natural resources of the Amazon. However, without its own legal personality, it had been acting below its capabilities.

The CBA was founded in 2002 and began its activities in 2003 under the name of Centro de Biotecnologia da Amazônia (CBA), linked to the Superintendency of the Manaus Free Trade Zone (Suframa). The name change, with a focus on business, was made along with the qualification of FUEA, by Decree No. 11,516.

Sworn in on July 7, 2023, the CBA Board of Directors is chaired by MDIC’s Secretary of Green Economy, Decarbonization and Bioindustry, Rodrigo Rollemberg.

“The CBA has a robust structure and enormous potential. Its challenge is to network with other institutions in the Amazon to transform knowledge into products and businesses with social and economic impact”,

said Rollemberg.

Among the institutions with the potential to participate in the projects, according to the chairman of the CBA Board of Directors, are the National Institute for Research in the Amazon (INPA), the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), federal and state universities, education institutes, private science and technology institutes and companies interested in operating in the region.

Under the contract, FUEA will have goals to meet over the next four years. An annex to the document sets indicators to be achieved by 2027: raising R$ 120 million in private funds; generation of R$ 6 million in revenue from the sale of products, processes and services; application of a minimum percentage of resources in activities, processes and final projects, in increasing rates until reaching 40% in the last year. As a source of funds, FUEA will also receive annual transfers of R$ 11,993,093.95 from the MDIC, provided for in the contract.

Targets for the FUEA include numbers of projects developed (starts with 5 in 2024 and reaches 30 in 2027); number of research lead users in laboratories (rises from 45 in 2024 to 60 in 2027); number of patent asset registrations (from 2 in 2024 to 10 in 2027).
