Manaus (AM) – In order to learn in the best way, students at Escola Estadual Dr. Isaac Sverner, located in the São José Operário I neighborhood, East Zone of Manaus, participated in a project that focuses on knowledge of chemical substances produced by the human body, which help in individual self-knowledge and health.

The activity sought to learn about the functioning of these substances and understanding the influence on their own feelings and emotions, to contribute to the prevention of cases of anxiety.

The study entitled “The Chemistry of anxiety: understanding your emotions through organic chemistry”, supported by the State Government, through the Science at School Program (PCE), of the Research Support Foundation of the State of Amazonas (Fapeam) – Public Notice No. 004/2022, mainly involved students who are already finalists, and addressed organic chemistry topics, such as structural formulas, organic substances and functions.

It was also possible to expand the project to all grades from elementary to high school, with expository classes, debates, lectures, conversation circles and the help of the therapeutic notebook (journal of experiences). In addition, the lectures “The Chemistry of Emotions” were promoted during the “Yellow September” campaign, and “Mental Health” given by students of the Academic League of Psychiatry of Amazonas (LAPAM) and a psychologist.

According to the project coordinator, Professor Thayná Borges da Silva, the social theme addressed is of great relevance, since studies related to anxiety in adolescents expose the importance of approaching this theme for society and for professionals in the area of ​​education and health.

The objective of the activity was to help students learn about themselves, so that they can understand, analyze and accept their feelings and emotions, through the scientific concepts of Chemistry, so that they can prevent future cases of anxiety or know how to better deal with it. feeling.

The activities also clarified what anxiety is; which organic chemicals related to this emotion can influence mood; know structural and molecular formulas and the organic functions present in neurotransmitters, organic compounds, medicines and herbal medicines.
The project also guided students to develop a personalized self-knowledge routine, naturally stimulating chemical substances and neurotransmitters to deal with anxiety, including physical activity habits, dialogue, healthy eating, rest and therapeutic writing.

“The development of this theme comes to work on communication skills, empathy, understanding, initiative, discipline and interpersonal relationship skills, which can influence their behavior in society, as well as with colleagues and family members”, highlighted the teacher.

For Thayná Silva, by understanding emotions, students develop emotional intelligence and, thus, learn to have greater control of their own emotions and deal with them in a healthy and mature way, a key factor for the development of students’ mental health and for establishing good relationships in society.

The project also sought to make students aware of the importance of medical advice, when necessary, to avoid habits such as self-medication, using a product that they believe will bring benefits in treating the disease or relieving symptoms.

According to the teacher, discussing mental health and chemistry goes beyond well-being, since working with strategies to deal with and understand anxiety, the student will not only develop physical health, but also emotional and mental health.

“The participation of students in scientific projects at school promotes not only the understanding of contextualized chemical concepts, but also awakens in the student a vocation for teaching or professionalization in the area of ​​natural sciences and their technologies, allowing the identification of their professional and academic area, and consequently, contributing to a society with quality of life”, he added.

The Science at School Program (PCE) is an action created by Fapeam, carried out in partnership with the State Department of Education and Sports (Seduc) and the Municipal Department of Manaus (Semed), aimed at the participation of teachers and students from state public schools from Amazonas and Manaus in scientific research and technological innovation projects to be developed in schools.
