In CPI, Anderson Torres defends Silvinei and says he did not interfere in the PRF’s performance in the election

Former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres said this Thursday morning (10), that he had no participation in the actions of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) in blocking roads in the second round of the 2022 elections, held on October 30. “I had no interference in the internal planning of the PRF, much less the PF”said Torres in his testimony to the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on Anti-democratic Acts, of the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District.

Questioned by the president of the collegiate, deputy Chico Vigilante (PT-DF), the former Minister of Justice said that the PRF and the Federal Police had their own planning. “They acted confirm their planning. This is not the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice.”said Torres.

This Wednesday (09), the former general director of the PRF Silvinei Vasques was arrested by order of the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, because of the blockades that the corporation made on election day. He is suspected of having used the position and functions of the corporation to benefit Jair Bolsonaro (PL), then candidate in the election.

Days before the vote, Vasques attended a meeting at Palácio do Alvorada, with Bolsonaro’s campaign coordination. On that occasion, as shown by the Estadão, the strategy of blocking federal highways was designed, with the purpose of supervising the irregular transport of voters, given the free transport guaranteed by the Supreme Court.

In the week following the meeting, Torres and Vasques held a side-by-side press conference with Márcio Nunes, former general director of the PF, to clarify the security strategy prepared by the government for the second round of elections.

The Federal Police is investigating details of the meetings on the eve of the elections between Silvinei and Anderson Torres. The objective is to verify if the ex-president’s assistants were directly involved in an alleged attempt to stop votes that could be given to the then candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Torres defended the performance of the former PRF director at the CPI and responded to Vigilante, changing the subject. He spoke about the blockades that Bolsonarist protesters made on the roads after the former president’s defeat at the polls. The chairman of the commission asked whether Vasques had disobeyed him, and the former minister replied that he had not. “They (from the PRF) worked non-stop day and night, without days off, to try to clear the obstruction. There were thousands of blocking points. The governors were not very involved in helping. It was really, really difficult.”

Torres’ statement this Thursday repeats the CPMI’s January 8 strategy. In the Senate, the former minister called the draft a coup found in his house on January 10, “legal aberration” and denied any responsibility for the demonstrations. The former minister avoided controversial statements and frustrated the governing base, which hoped to advance in the collegiate based on this testimony.
