Event organizers charged entry of R$100; bets ranged between R$500 and R$20 thousand

Manaus (AM) – A national cockfight was dismantled, on Saturday (27), on the Pau-Rosa branch, located on BR-174, after an anonymous complaint to the Animal Protection Commission of the Amazonas Legislative Assembly (CPAMA-Aleam). There, more than 80 roosters were seized and rescued by CPAMA. In addition, around 16 farmers were detained and taken to the area police station. The betting notes, names of the roosters’ owners and information about 200 people involved in the fights were found at the scene.

The action was carried out by the Amazonas Military Police (PMAM) and the Environmental Policing Battalion (BPAMB), together with state deputy Joana Darc (UB). According to information from witnesses, the organizers of the fights were from Boa Vista (RR) and charged R$ 100, per person, for entry to the criminal event, and the minimum bets were R$ 500, reaching R$ 10 thousand to R$20 thousand. Deputy Joana Darc stated that the practice is considered a crime and, despite the location of the criminals, the operation was a success, preventing more animals from suffering.

“It is a national for-profit fight, with participants from other states, such as Bahia, Roraima, among others. These animals are condemned to fight to the death, which is why it is a crime of mistreatment. The operation was a success, as the farmers were arrested and we prevented the event, which lasted 2 days, from happening, saving the lives of more than 80 roosters”, he pointed out.

It is worth noting that the animals were in a situation of abuse, with injuries to the chest and wings, with hyperthermia (increase in the animal’s body temperature due to excessive exposure to the sun and heat), some were blind and without spurs. An artificial spur and dead roosters were also found at the site.

Crime

Joana Darc is the author of State Law No. 6,423/2023, which prohibits the practice of fights involving wild, domestic or domesticated, native or exotic animals in Amazonas. The housing for the animals found was a small, fenced-in space without proper cleaning and feeding.

According to the legislation, anyone who is reported and convicted of fighting will be fined R$ 1.5 thousand, which can reach up to R$ 20 thousand, depending on the infraction and the condition of the animal.

“In Brazil, fighting animals, whether dogs, roosters or birds, is a crime of mistreatment. The value of the fines is based on the seriousness of the facts, taking into account the consequences for public health and the protection of the animal, which is inside an arena fighting for its life”, said Joana.
