The release of approximately 160 hours of recordings from the cameras of the internal circuit of the Palácio do Planalto on January 8 show moments of irritation by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), heated conversations between ministers and a sequence of security breaches that allowed unimpeded action by vandals for a long period.

Although some do not have audio, the images reveal several ministers, congressmen and other authorities in a state of perplexity on the night of the 8th, when assessing the damage.

At one point, Lula passes in front of his office, in the midst of a delegation of ministers and assistants, and gestures a lot at the signs of vandalism, showing irritation.

The anteroom of his office had been broken into at 3:56 pm, after a man kicked the glass door.

In the video, the man appears to kick even though he realized that his action would be recorded by a photojournalist from the Reuters news agency. On the day of the attacks, photographers and journalists were threatened and attacked at various points on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, and some were forced to erase their records.

The images indicate that the vandals stayed on the third floor of the Planalto, where the presidential office is located, for about an hour, from 3:20 pm to 4:30 pm.

Lula’s office, which was locked, was not vandalized, unlike several other places, including the office of the first lady, Rosângela da Silva, Janja.

The videos were released by the Office of Institutional Security of the Presidency, the GSI, after the Minister of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) Alexandre de Morais removed the secrecy about them.

The magistrate’s decision came after CNN Brasil released some of the images, showing that the then head of the GSI, General Gonçalves Dias, was walking among the demonstrators. GDias, as he is called by his team, ended up resigning.

In addition to Lula’s irritation, at one point it is possible to see a heated conversation between Minister Flávio Dino (Justice), who gestures emphatically, and Minister José Múcio (Defense), who is talking on the phone.

The Presidency’s 33 internal security circuit cameras cover areas from the parking lot to the fourth floor, which has not been invaded.

From several angles, it is possible to notice a series of security flaws and an apparent disorientation of the few agents in the place, which allowed access and free movement of vandals through the floors and rooms of the Planalto.

The main entrance to the palace was left unguarded for 45 minutes after police and military personnel from the BGP (Presidential Guard Battalion) lifted the blockade at the site.

Without riot teams, Bolsonarist vandals who had already entered the Planalto through other places opened the main door of the building – which facilitated the access of the scammers and the depredation of windows, works of art and security equipment.

The threat to invade the Planalto Palace began around 3 pm, when the National Congress was already taken over by the coup leaders. A group of vandals confronted military police in the parking lot of the building.

Around 20 police and military personnel from the BGP then set up a roadblock at 3:11 pm in front of the main gate that gives access to the palace. In the distance, Bolsonaristas threw stones, cones and fire extinguishers.

The man who vandalized Dom João 6º’s clock, for example, used fire extinguishers to clear a path through the Planalto Palace and access the upper floors, the videos show.

In addition to the historic relic, Antonio Claudio Alves Ferreira, 30, who on the day of the invasion wore a shirt with the face of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), damaged an ATM and another object using the pole of a flag, without being molested in no time. He was arrested by the Federal Police on January 23 in the city of Uberlândia (MG).

Major José Eduardo Natale de Paula Pereira, who was the security coordinator for the facilities in Planalto, was seen half an hour away interacting with protesters on the floor of the presidential office.

Pereira appears in the camera footage from the third floor of Planalto talking and giving water to the vandals. At other times, he goes around on the phone when they have already invaded rooms on the presidential floor and witnesses a scammer stealing a fire extinguisher.

In addition to the depredation, at least one vandal tried to break into an ATM at Banco do Brasil, in Planalto, but ended up giving up after failing.

Others felt free to exchange phone messages, smoke, take selfies and lives while participating in the invasion.

Some Bolsonaristas even took pictures of Dom João 6º’s watch after some of them had placed the damaged relic back on their table. A short time later she was knocked down again.

There are few moments when there are incisive actions by GSI men in an attempt to protect the place. One of them shows that two vandals were stopped in an attempt to climb the Planalto floors and fled after seeing a GSI agent with a gun in his hand.

These actions, however, were isolated and no longer occurred after the invasion took shape.

The alleged leniency of the security forces in protecting the headquarters of the three Powers has already resulted in the provisional removal of Governor Ibaneis Rocha (MDB) and the intervention in public security in the Federal District, measures that have already come to an end.

President Lula also showed dissatisfaction with the military environment, made changes in the GSI and claimed to defend that all those who acted irregularly on the day of the attacks should be punished.

Despite this, the government worked against the installation of a CPI in Congress to investigate the attacks, given the assessment that this could disrupt its economic priorities, in addition to serving as a platform for Bolsonarist conspiracy theories — the main one, that the government encouraged the attacks.

After the images that overthrew the GSI minister, the government started to support the joint commission of deputies and senators, which will be created next week, in view of the fact that it had become politically unfeasible to hold it.

The intention now is to try to obtain a majority in the CPI to direct the work in the direction of what is being done by the investigations of the Federal Police and other institutions, which is to identify and punish not only the vandals, but the financiers and intellectual authors. of coup groups.

This Sunday (23), the PF took the testimony of nine soldiers who were working on January 8. They all left without speaking to the press.
