The cold drinks market grew and reached 75% of Starbucks beverage sales in the United States, according to a balance released by the company this month.

Cold drinks grew 8% in the last fiscal quarter, which ended June 30, compared to a 2% growth in hot drinks.

The summer with very high temperatures in the northern hemisphere may have contributed to the rise, but the trend has been observed for some time and, according to the company, the movement is a reflection of the younger public’s preference for cold drinks.

In fact, the consumption of iced coffees has been a sector trend. Cafeterias of various sizes perceive growth not only in cold brewswhich are cold-pressed coffees, but also chilled espressos.

Overall, Starbucks reported a 7% increase in sales in North America. On the global stage, the main highlight was China, which saw an increase of 46%.

In September last year, the company announced that it had opened its 6,000th store in the Asian giant. The inauguration was also the 1,000th unit in Shanghai, the first city in the world to achieve this milestone.

The balance also informs that the company opened 588 new stores worldwide during the quarter. As a result, the total reached 37,222 units, 51% owned and 49% licensed.

Events with coffee tastings and workshops take place in Rio and in the interior of SP

Between the 20th and 22nd of October, Rio will host an event for specialty coffees with tastings, lectures and workshops. Rio Coffee Nation will take place at Pier Mauá, downtown, and tickets went on sale this week.

The ticket gives access to the general pavilion, where the exhibitors are located. To participate in the workshops, you must purchase a specific ticket – prices vary. There are workshops on introduction to tasting, how to open a coffee shop and how to pair coffees, among others.

According to Martina Barth d’Avila, responsible for producing the event, Rio Coffee Nation is focused on specialty and organic coffees and will have a fully sustainable structure – there will be carbon compensation for the emissions necessary for the fair to take place.

One of the pillars of the event is to highlight small producers – although large companies in the sector also participate. Therefore, all exhibitors will occupy a stand with the same format, regardless of size.

Meanwhile, on the 19th and 20th of August, the city of Americana, 120 km from São Paulo, will host a free event. Amaro Experience receives coffee brands from Minas Gerais, Bahia, São Paulo and other related products for tastings, pairings and experiences during the weekend.

There will also be live music and workshops, as well as a coffee preparation championship using the Koar method.

Brazilian harvest starts with more exports than the previous year

The 2023/2024 Brazilian coffee crop started with a better export volume than the previous one, according to a report by Cecafé (Council of Coffee Exporters from Brazil).

According to the entity’s survey, Brazil exported 2.991 million bags of 60 kg in July this year, which is considered the first month of the 2023/24 harvest, which represents an increase of 18.7% in relation to the 2.521 million registered in the same period last year.

The good result in July, however, was not enough to reverse the drop registered in the first semester. Thus, in the accumulated result for the year, the country exported 19.222 million bags, down 14.7% compared to the same period in 2022.

According to Cecafé, the negative result is a reflection of “less availability of the product, after two smaller harvests in 2021 and 2022, and the decline in prices on the international market”.
