Ibama analyzes ‘no hurry’ request from Petrobras about Foz – 07/21/2023 – Panel

Almost two months after Petrobras presented a new request to explore for oil in Foz do Amazonas, Ibama says that the intention is to analyze the request “without haste” and in a technical way.

The justification is to avoid any decision that could bring environmental risks. In addition, the agency cites the lack of arms to evaluate the many processes that arrive.

On May 25, Petrobras submitted a request for Ibama to re-examine the request to obtain an environmental license to explore the Foz do Amazonas basin. The oil company’s first demand was denied by the environmental agency on May 17.

In addition to the technical justification, already publicly manifested by the president of the body, Rodrigo Agostinho, there is a lack of employees to handle the demand.

Today Ibama has around 2,800 civil servants, 470 of whom are old enough to retire. At the same time, it has a list of 3,200 environmental licensing processes pending analysis and 2,200 pesticide registrations in the same situation.

The body was left out of the last wave of vacancies in public tenders announced by Minister Esther Dweck (Management) on Tuesday (18). Despite this, the folder authorized the nomination of 257 approved in a previous competition.
