‘I did everything right’, says Pimenta about home in Brasília – 03/20/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Minister Paulo Pimenta, from Secom (Secretary of Communication) of the Lula government, affirms that he strictly followed all the requirements of the law when declaring his assets to the Electoral Court.

“What did I do wrong?”, he asked the column about the fact that the house he lives in, in Brasília, is not on the list of assets sent by him to the Regional Electoral Court of Rio Grande do Sul.

The information was published by Sheet. The property is located in a prime area of ​​Brasília and was acquired for R$ 1.6 million in 2013.

Pimenta claims that he followed the PT’s instructions when making the declaration of assets.

“I did everything right,” he says. “I forwarded the documents to the party in accordance with the guidelines received”, he continues.

The PT, he says, recommended that candidates send the current declaration of assets, and stated that it could simply be “a copy of the income tax declaration”.

He forwarded the document he handed over to the tax authorities to the PT, which sent it to the Electoral Justice.

The house, however, does not appear explicitly in his statement.

This is because, according to the Federal Revenue, the joint assets of a couple have to be declared by only one of the spouses.

The other partner must include in his statement the information that his assets and rights are listed in the spouses’ statement.

The partner’s CPF must also be informed.

“My wife’s CPF is on my tax return, everything was done correctly”, says the minister.

Paulo Pimenta is married in partial community property with historian Claudia Dutra, who at the time of the purchase of the house was an employee of the Ministry of Education. Her name also appears on the deed to the property, according to the report by Sheet.

Last week, Pimenta received President Lula and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, for dinner.

“Do you think that, if you wanted to hide the house, you would invite the president himself to a meeting in it?”, says the minister.

The Electoral Law (9.504/1997) requires all politicians who intend to run for office to submit an updated declaration of all their assets in the candidacy registration request. The information is published on the transparency pages of the TSE (Tribunal Superior Eleitoral) for consultation by any voter.

One of the objectives of the rule is to allow society to monitor and eventually identify signs of suspicious equity developments or conflicts of interest.

The asset declarations made to the Revenue Service and the Electoral Court, however, have different formats and objectives. Compliance with one does not exclude the obligation of the other.

The annual income tax report made to the Treasury has tax purposes and its own rules, in addition to being confidential, that is, its information cannot be accessed by any citizen.

The declaration of assets to the Electoral Justice is public, and the politician must include the current list of assets, containing a simplified description and the value declared to the Revenue, without the need to include addresses or other detailed data.
