I always had the dream of visiting Japan, its ancient culture and its modernity – 12/13/2023 – Robson Jesus

Since childhood I wanted to visit Japan, but obviously it was something very far from my peripheral reality. However, after starting my current project, in March 2022, I knew it would be a matter of time before I could experience this moment. Therefore, the time has come! I left Angola towards the city of Tokyo, Japan.

As soon as I arrived at the airport, what until then was just a rumor for me became concrete. I was amazed at the friendly and respectful service at Japanese immigration. It’s difficult to set foot in this country and not be enchanted by the cleanliness, kindness and technology.

I was welcomed by Miguel Kamiunten, a Brazilian who has lived in the country for over 30 years and who I met through a connection with Carla Bahia, my Instagram follower. He made a point of programming attractions that generally only natives are aware of, as well as recommending excellent restaurants that are often forgotten.

Considering that I have been out of Brazil for 19 months, Miguel chose to take me to Gunma.

The city, located north of Tokyo, has approximately 40 thousand inhabitants. Of these, around 10% are Brazilian, which explains the food, drinks, supermarkets and many attractions of our country in that location.

It was good to have this taste, but my desire was to immerse myself in the habits of this culture! So, we continued with our schedule, which in addition to providing me with experiences rooted in Japanese culture, included traditional tourist attractions.

On my third day in Tokyo, I was able to meet Kathia Nakayama, a Japanese-Brazilian who has lived in the country for 20 years. An incredible woman, who together with Miguel made it possible for me to delve deeper into the region’s gastronomy.

However, to understand any country we need to see all sides. Because of this, in Yokohama I was able to visit shelters and accommodation for people in vulnerable situations. This was not something I expected to find.

As I walked through the streets, I was surprised to see demonstrations and demands, because I had the impression that the Japanese in general were “reserved”.

The language barrier wasn’t a problem, because I was always accompanied by someone who speaks Japanese. But when I got there I saw that the problem was bigger than I imagined. Few speak English, even in hotels. At my hotel in Tokyo, the receptionists didn’t speak English (and this was in a large hotel, close to the train station).

On the other hand, Japanese people who speak English are often embarrassed. Do you know the Japanese search for perfection? Well, that exists.

I continued walking until I reached Takeshita Street, an ideal destination for lovers of Japanese fashion. After a while, there I was, one of the four million people who pass by the corner of Shibuya every day!

It was an enriching seven days, and being in such a welcoming atmosphere encouraged me to set a return date.

Japan, I promise to know more about you with my own eyes.
