In April, Hyundai presented a prototype vehicle equipped with its new e-Cornering system, a technology that allows the car to turn the four wheels at 90° and walk sideways, in a movement dubbed “crab walking” (in English, crab ride).

The new system was initially presented at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2023, in January, with an animation video, and has now been implemented in a prototype by the automaker.

The e-Cornering system allows the car to turn on its own axis, go completely sideways and be driven diagonally. Each of the four wheels is capable of turning independently.

See the e-Cornering system below:

The car used for the test was the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which had its front and rear bumpers removed to facilitate the ability of the wheels to turn 90 degrees in each direction. The tests were done on public roads and outside controlled environments, showing the vehicle being used in the “real world”.

The new technology is still in the testing phase, and the automaker claims that essential components for running the system are still in the process of adjustments.
