Humanitarian aid aimed at families affected by extreme drought will continue in riverside communities following the delivery schedule set up by the City of Manaus

Manaus (AM) – In three days of Operation Drought, 3,500 families from riverside communities affected by the historic drought were assisted by Manaus City Hall with humanitarian aid. This Thursday (5), Mayor David Almeida accompanied the task force to deliver supplies to communities in the Tarumã hub. The action, carried out in the São Sebastião community on the Cuieiras river, involved almost 1,200 families from 14 riverside communities.

“Today, we are serving the community of the Cuieiras River and its tributaries. We have all the integrated departments providing assistance and health, it is the friendly arm of the city hall, just like in the pandemic, in the biggest flood, and now we are working in the most severe drought. With teamwork, transversality ends up flowing more and bringing more results, and the result of this is the population assisted and the work being carried out”, stated Almeida.

According to the Municipal Secretariat of Agriculture, Supply, Center, Market and Informal Commerce (Semacc), the action, which began in the first days of the week, has already served 3,500 families with food, hygiene kits and drinking water, in joint work with various municipal departments so that all residents are reached.

“Going up the Rio Negro, we have several communities that are already isolated, and since the beginning of the week we have been able to serve these communities. We have efficient logistics to serve all these communities, and this is very important, because we managed it quickly, energetically and quickly, fulfilling the mayor’s determination, carrying out a successful management”, said the secretary of Semacc, Wanderson Costa.

Difficulties

To access these more distant communities during this period it is necessary to face many difficulties on a long road route, mud in areas that were previously taken by rivers, and extremely low waters, with some places reaching just 20 centimeters high.

According to reports from residents, it is the first time that a mayor has closely monitored the reality of the community. They also state that, with the city hall’s prompt response, it is possible to hope that they will have help to get through this period of severe drought.

“Today, we are having the honor of welcoming the mayor to our community, and he is seeing our reality up close, our difficulty in getting off the boat and getting here. We are very grateful for these kits and baskets that are arriving for us and our families, because no mayor has ever come here, and now we are finally being looked at and assisted”, thanked housewife Ana Paula Souza, resident of the São Sebastião community. .

Community member Vanessa dos Santos says that the supplies will help combat the negative impacts caused by the low water. “This help, thank God, came at a good time, this look that the mayor is taking with our community, this will help me and my two children a lot during this month”, she said.
