The Committee on Pensions, Social Assistance, Childhood, Adolescence and Family of the Chamber of Deputies approved this Wednesday (7) the proposal that prohibits prisoners from receiving any type of social benefit, as of the final and unappealable sentence. The measure is valid for prisoners serving sentences in closed or semi-open regimes.

The approved text is a replacement for Bill 3256/20, which does not make substantive changes to the original text, authored by former deputy Alexandre Frota. However, the new text determines the need to await the final and unappealable decision, informed Agência Câmara. The proposal, which is being processed in a conclusive manner, will be analyzed by the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission.

The rapporteur, Deputy Fernando Rodolfo (PL-PE), reinforced the importance of the measure. “In addition to being incongruous, granting social benefits to prisoners can encourage the commission of crimes, since they can use the resource to finance criminal activities inside and outside prisons”, he pointed out.
