Hoffmann calls for the end of electoral justice by criticizing fines imposed on the PT

During the debate in the Special Committee of the Chamber on the controversial Amnesty PEC, last Wednesday (20), the president of the PT, deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (RS), criticized the millionaire fines imposed on the PT for non-compliance with gender quotas and called for the end of Electoral Justice in the country.

“I wanted to talk about the fines from the electoral courts, the amounts mentioned here, R$750 million, R$23 million, this is not an enforceable fine, there is no way to pay it, we have no money. They (the fines) bring the subjective vision of the court’s technical team, which systematically enters the lives of political parties, wanting to provide guidance, interpreting the will of leaders, the will of candidates. This makes it impossible for parties […] It cannot have an Electoral Court… In fact, the only country in the world that has an Electoral Court is Brazil, which is already absurd. And it costs three times more than campaign financing. Maybe we need to look there to change,” said Hoffmann.

After the statement, the PT president was mocked by other parliamentarians who recalled that former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was harshly penalized for criticizing the Electoral Court during last year’s campaign.

When contacted by the press after the Chamber session, Gleisi chose to remain silent on the matter.

The vote on the Amnesty PEC was postponed. The proposal provides for the removal of punishments imposed on parties that did not meet the quota of public resources for candidacies according to the color and gender quota.
