A new set of bridges allow pedestrians to reach New York’s most popular elevated park, the High Line, from Moynihan Train Hall, the city’s busiest public transportation hub, without having to cross multiple streets.
The High Line Moynihan Connector, as the new extension is called, is 183 meters long and comprises two interconnected bridges. With an investment of US$ 50 million (R$ 240 million), the project complements the efforts of the state of New York to improve the region of Midtown West.
The extension was financed through a public-private partnership between Empire State Development, the Port Authority and the Brookfield Properties group. The official inauguration took place last Wednesday (21), after 18 months of construction.
The project offers green spaces, public art installations and a functional connection between other important transport hubs in the city. The initiative represents another step in revitalizing Manhattan’s West Side. The idea, according to the organizers, is to provide greater accessibility and connectivity in a safe and pleasant environment.
The High Line is a decommissioned railway line, turned into a park open to the public in 2009. The site attracts over 8 million visitors a year and is estimated to have spurred billions of dollars in redevelopment in the surrounding area.
