The heat wave that is hitting several Brazilian regions led UFMT (Federal University of Mato Grosso) to suspend in-person activities this Thursday (16) and Friday (17) on the campuses of Cuiabá, Araguaia, Sinop and Várzea Grande.
According to the university management, the decision aims to preserve the health and well-being of students, teachers and staff and was based on scientific data.
On Tuesday (14), Cuiabá was at the top of the list of hottest cities in the country, registering 41.8°C, according to Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology).
Inmet issued red for a heat wave across the entire territory of Mato Grosso, indicating a danger to human health.
According to a letter from the dean of people management at UFMT, André Baptista Leite, all university units must carry out activities remotely.
“The health and quality of life of employees and the academic community are priorities. We are mainly considering the red alert issued by Inmet”, he said.
The strong heat in the capital of Mato Grosso even affects the mascot of the local football team, Cuiabá Sport Clube. Claudivan Gonçalo Rodrigues, known as Douradinho (typical fish from the Cuiabá River), said that he has changed his display routine to mitigate the high temperatures.
“This year, when the heat is more intense, we are always prioritizing actions in the late afternoon or at night, which is less hot,” said the man wearing a heavy costume.
Considering the entire country, the municipality that had the highest temperature this Thursday was Porto Murtinho, in Mato Grosso do Sul, with 43.4°C. The state, by the way, had five of the seven hottest cities of the day: Corumbá (42.3°C), Aquidauana (41.3°C), Nhumirim (41.2°C) and Coxim (40.9°C ).
The city of Rio de Janeiro had its highest temperature of the year at around 1pm this Thursday, with 40.6°C, recorded at the Marambaia meteorological station, according to Inmet. The mark surpassed the 40.4°C of last Sunday (12), measured in Vila Militar.
