Haddad is pressured on social media not to tax Shein – 03/20/2023 – Panel

Fernando Haddad, Minister of Finance, has received hundreds of messages on social networks pressuring him not to create taxes for large platforms such as Shein, Ali Express, Shopee and Wish.

Haddad received deputies and senators from the FPE (Frente Parlamentar Mista do Empreendedorismo) on Wednesday (15) who asked for help in the opposite direction, to face what they call “digital smuggling” carried out by these Asian companies, which would be taking advantage of loopholes to sell products without taxation or underinvoiced in Brazil.

In its pages, the minister has received comments such as “we do not accept international taxation of parcels”, “isn’t your president the father of the poor? Why are you taxing the poor?” and “So wanting to break up with Shein, are you? Aren’t you guys going to make the poor guy happy again?”.

“The taxation we want is that of large fortunes, not our purchases of R$ 100”, says one of the most liked comments. “Cover the taxes of the big businessmen that we all know they evade, cut the exemptions of the rich, but don’t harm the worker who cannot afford to buy an R$80 blouse in a national store with his salary of R$1,400”.

Brazilian industrialists and traders claim that these companies are harming national activity, which is unable to compete on equal terms when paying taxes.

They define as “digital smuggling” the activities of these companies, which deny illegality.
