GSI delivers images of the invasion of the Planalto Palace and investigation report to the STF

Interim minister Ricardo Cappelli, of the Institutional Security Office (STF), delivered this Saturday afternoon (22) to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) the complete images showing the invasion of the Planalto Palace on January 8.

The act took place after a determination by Minister Alexandre de Moraes made on Friday afternoon (21) to investigate the leak of recordings showing agents and the former minister of the portfolio, Marco Edson Gonçalves Dias, circulating among the invaders.

Cappelli also delivered the report of the internal investigation opened at the GSI to investigate the agents’ conduct on the day of the invasion.

“We have already delivered to the STF the full images of the Planalto Palace on January 8th and a copy of the investigation opened at the GSI”, he said in a post on twitter at the beginning of the night. The images were under secrecy, which was also suspended by the STF.

Moraes had given Cappelli a period of 48 hours to deliver “all existing material” from the recordings of the Palace’s internal security circuit “with due regard for the integral preservation of the images”. The images totaled more than 160 hours from 22 cameras, according to CNN Brasil, which released the edited material on Wednesday (19).

The images show the then minister Gonçalves Dias together with civil and military agents of the GSI circulating among the demonstrators who invaded the Planalto Palace on January 8, talking and giving directions through the corridors of the building. One of them even offers water to the invaders.

Gonçalves Dias resigned on Wednesday afternoon (19) after a private meeting with Lula, who appointed Cappelli as interim minister and ordered an X-ray of the structure of the GSI. The new minister said that changes can be made to the cabinet’s attributions, but without saying what they should be – a report will be presented to the president when he returns from his trip to Europe.

On Friday (21), Gonçalves Dias gave testimony to the Federal Police and said that he did not order the arrest of the demonstrators who invaded the Palace due to lack of conditions in view of the number of people, and that he also did not give any order for them to leave the place. He also said that he requested reinforcement of the Military Police and the Army and that there was a “general blackout of the system” due to the lack of information about the proportion of the protest.
