The Puebla Group, which brings together left-wing Latin American leaders, supported the hard-line measures announced by the right-wing president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, against the wave of violence in the country.

“We follow the call to the government of President Noboa and other institutional actors so that they do not spare measures to protect Ecuadorians in these difficult times”, says a statement from the group.

Among the Brazilians who are part of the entity are the president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, the international advisor to the Presidency, Celso Amorim, the president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, former president Dilma Rousseff and the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva himself.

Among Ecuadorians, the main figure is former president Rafael Correa, who, despite being an opponent of Noboa, supported the measures.

“Ecuador needs to consolidate national and regional unity in its fight against organized crime. All our support and solidarity with the Ecuadorian people”, says the statement.
