Group of Prerogatives lawyers comes out in defense of Barroso, whose opponent he is – 07/14/2023 – Panel

The Prerogativas group, which is composed of lawyers, jurists and public defenders, decided to defend Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court, who has received criticism since he said the phrase “we defeated Bolsonarism” on Wednesday ( 12), at a UNE (National Union of Students) event.

The group of lawyers emerged in opposition to the methods of Operation Lava Jato and in defense of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). In this context, he clashed on different occasions with Barroso, who aligned himself with the operation headed by Deltan Dallagnol and Sergio Moro.

“Especially after the events of January 8, 2023, once and for all, ‘Bolsonarism’ became definitively associated with a serious and dangerous deformation of politics, due to its undeniable practices of violence, lies and coup radicalization. context, Minister Barroso’s speech is far from representing a breach of his impartiality as a judge, nor a derogatory judgment of voters in general. It is, in fact, the necessary stigmatization of a deleterious kind of radicalization, harmful to the stability of the rules of the democratic game”, says a note from the group.

“Taking the sentence out of context could cause great damage to the democratic field. Giving the impression that the Justice system was instrumentalized in Lula’s favor is a great nonsense. Lula was a victim of the instrumentalization of the Justice system when his political rights and when he was arrested,” says Marco Aurélio de Carvalho, coordinator of Prerogativas.

“‘Bolsonarism’, in short, began to harbor countless delusions and follies of fascist, Nazi, racist and misogynistic inspiration, always dedicated to the irresponsible stimulus to intolerance, based on the dissemination of hatred, prejudice and the subversion of reality of the facts. And as one of its main mobilization tools, ‘Bolsonarism’ actively promotes, through gross manipulations, the discredit of the electoral process, threatening to undermine the population’s confidence in the democratic system”, he continues.

“In this sense and for these reasons, the expression used by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the STF, when he considered that ‘Bolsonarism’ within Brazilian society had been defeated, refers to the success of resistance to anomalous political extremism and to the coup d’état by him Therefore, the Prerogatives group understands that there is no reason for Minister Barroso to be reproached for his statement, much less accused of violating his duty of impartiality through it”, concludes the note.

Carvalho also says that he expected more generosity from Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), president of the Senate, who called Barroso’s speech inappropriate, unfortunate and inopportune and said he was waiting for a retraction.

“Those who failed to defend democracy and institutions must be recanted. The Senate president’s charges should be directed at these people,” he says.

Attorney General of the Union and also a member of Prerogativas, Jorge Messias has been working together to try to soften the effect of placing Barroso in the Judiciary, according to the Panel.
