The shock of Gabriela Anelli’s death is as great, or greater, than the murder of teenager Márcio Gasparin, in 1995. Márcio was 16 years old. Gabriela, a 23-year-old girl. Outside of these two extremes, drama almost became natural.

In August 2011, Corinthians player Douglas Karim Silva was found in the Tietê river, thrown during a fight in the north of São Paulo, after Palmeiras 2 x 1 Corinthians. The game took place in Presidente Prudente, 558 kilometers from the crime.

There are those who defend the stoppage of football. Well, for how long? If it depends on preventive and punitive measures, we will kill football and the homicides will continue.

Gabriela died on July 9, the one-year anniversary of the murder of Marcelo Aloizio de Arruda, a PT municipal guard, killed by Jorge José da Rocha Guaranho. Reports at the time reported that Guaranho invaded Marcelo’s birthday party shouting “Here is Bolsonaro!”

28 years ago, when Márcio Garparin was the victim of a homicide in Pacaembu, the Paulista Federation prohibited uniformed fans in the stands, sales of alcoholic beverages inside and around the stadiums and flags. Street vendors could not work.

Six months later, noticing that the same fans sat in the same seats, only without the props that identified their factions, the magazine Placar decided to investigate how the fans lived.

Assigned by the newsroom, I went to the headquarters of São Paulo’s main uniform, asked for an enrollment form, paid the enrollment fee and, not being a fan of the same club, I joined. After publication, the commander of the Military Police battalion, Marcos Marinho, invited me for a conversation.

He explained that the PM could not do more, because the supporters were not prohibited from recruiting new supporters. In other words, they could continue to collect.

On Tuesday (11), Mayor Ricardo Nunes spoke about inspecting bars and restaurants so that they do not serve drinks in glass bottles.

Nunes signed his own certificate of incompetence. Bars do not sell glass on match days. Street vendors sell. The mayor, and even journalists, need to attend stadiums.

The bars strictly comply with what was signed, in agreement with the city hall, and only distribute drinks in disposable cups.

But has no city hall inspector seen street vendors selling bottles in recent years? If you haven’t seen it, you’re incompetent. If you saw it, why not ban it?

In Gabriela’s case, the Military Police committed a primary error. It was enough to block the entrance to Rua Padre Antônio Tomás, where only people from Palmeira can enter with tickets for boxes and for the Central East sector, far away from the division with the visiting fans.

As this blockade was not carried out, there were uniformed Palmeiras fans circulating near the partition with the red-blacks and without sufficient policing.

Gabriela’s death is explained by society’s virulence and the PM’s failure to plan. The fans’ war requires a pact involving the federal government, the ministries of Justice and Sports. Zero tolerance. Make football-related crimes feel like the punishment that Prohibition now offers drivers.

Brazil only ended inflation when there was political will. The only reason you can’t end violence in football is for the same reason.

I pay tax and go to the stadium. My kids go too.

The government has to put an end to violence.

It’s no use simulating competence and holding the bottle.
