Governors of five states appoint relatives – 01/17/2023 – Panel

At least five governors who took office in January have appointed relatives to the top of their respective administrations.

The one from Alagoas, Paulo Dantas (MDB), is the one who will have the most family members in his management: he appointed his daughter, a cousin and an aunt to positions.

The daughter, physician Paula Dantas, was appointed to the Extraordinary Secretariat for Early Childhood, a position newly created by the governor for the new term.

State deputy Carla Dantas, cousin of the governor, is the new Secretary of Agriculture of Alagoas. Samya Suruagy, who is the governor’s aunt and public prosecutor, was reappointed to the state attorney general’s office.

In Sergipe, Governor Fábio Mitidieri (PSD) chose his wife, businesswoman Érica Mitidieri, to take over the Secretariat of Social Assistance and Citizenship.

Re-elected governors of Rondônia and Roraima also maintained in secretariats relatives who already held positions in the first term.

In Rondônia, Governor Marcos Rocha (União Brasil) appointed his wife, Luana Nunes, to the Social Assistance Secretariat.

Antonio Denarium (PP) kept his sister-in-law Tânia Soares de Souza in charge of the Department of Labor and Social Welfare.

As pointed out by Sheet, the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra (PSDB), appointed two cousins ​​to her administration. In São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freiras (republicans) even nominated a brother-in-law, but ended up withdrawing from the choice.

The Federal Supreme Court prohibits the appointment of a spouse, partner or direct, collateral or affinity relative, up to the third degree of the authority responsible for the appointment. However, there is an exception for state departments.

Sought after, the governors allege that the nominations responded to technical criteria and are not irregular, since positions are considered of a political nature.

Relatives of allies are also among the appointments of the new governors. The governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT), chose lawyer Eduardo Sodré Martins as Secretary of the Environment, stepson of Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), leader of the Lula government in the Senate.

In the same state, the brother of the lieutenant governor, Geraldo Júnior (MDB), José Acácio Ferreira, will head SEI, an economic and social studies body in Bahia.
