The state governor, Clécio Luís, will show the sustainable forest management policy implemented in Amapá to ambassadors from the European Union, which brings together more than 30 countries. The meeting will take place this Thursday, 25th, at the headquarters of the Austrian Embassy, in Brasília (DF).

The invitation came from the Austrian ambassador Stefan Scholz, who visited Amapá in November last year and was surprised by the management system from concept to practice. The diplomat strengthened ties with the Government to seek cooperation in favor of socioeconomic development and environmental preservation.

“My visit to Amapá was a true discovery. The presentation of facts and figures about the state’s Sustainable Forest Management system is fantastic, from concept to practice, it helped me to better understand Amapá’s role as a national leader in the field”highlighted Scholz.

Amapá is a reference in management

The model developed in Amapá is a reference in Brazil and the world. One example is the largest community-based forest management project in the country, managed by the Maracá Agroextractive Settlement Workers Association (Atexma), in Mazagão. In this initiative, the use of the forest is done intelligently, through the study of which trees will be exploited, and with social responsibility, offering the “Bolsa Floresta”.

“It’s not deforestation, it’s management. The Government knows what is inside through the inventory and can control the area. The risk of someone taking wood illegally goes to zero and what is produced is done legally. This is one of the projects that we will present to the ambassadors, with the aim of showing how Amapá is a land of opportunities and that the people who live here deserve the investments we are seeking”quoted the governor.

Strengthening international relations with the European continent, the meeting will be attended by ambassadors in Brazil from European Union member countries, such as Portugal, Croatia, Switzerland, Norway, Belgium, Finland, Ireland and Italy.

Environmental policies

Among the states in the Legal Amazon, Amapá guarantees the lowest deforestation rate with a reduction of almost 15% between 2022 and 2023. In addition to forest management, other policies applied by the State will also be presented, such as those presented by the governor at the Conference United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 (COP28), in Dubai.

“The more transparency about how projects work, the more we gain credibility, not only for the market, but for the world to understand that it is possible to look at the Amazon from its forestry assets, but also knowing that people live here”highlighted Clécio Luís.

The expectation is to create a connection between the countries and discuss the possibilities of economic cooperation and investments in different projects.

“Amapá seeks to present itself to the international community as a state that complies with environmental and climate agreements, but also that needs and wants to develop. We are open to partnerships that can boost and transform our potential into reality”highlights the Secretary of State for International Relations and Foreign Trade, Lucas Abraham.

European Union

Created in 1993, the European Union is an economic bloc that brings together 27 independent states located, for the most part, on the European continent. The organization performs the function of political and monetary union, acting in the economic, political and legal spheres and also in favor of the security and socioeconomic development of member countries.

The European Council defined four priority areas in the 2019-2024 strategic agenda, designed to guide the work of the EU institutions: protecting citizens and freedoms; develop a strong and dynamic economic base; build a climate-neutral, green, fair and social Europe; and promote European interests and values on the world stage.

Amazon Fund

The Amazon Fund, created by the Federal Government in 2008, received in 2023 a large volume of new donations from the European Union (20 million euros), Germany (35 million euros), Denmark (150 million Danish crowns), as well as countries that are not part of the EU, such as the United Kingdom (80 million pounds), Switzerland (5 million Swiss francs) and Norway (largest historical donor).

The EU declared support, in September 2023, for a plan to boost the protection of the Amazon, pledging to coordinate financial contributions from the bloc’s members and ensure that the money is spent as envisaged in its Global Gateway investment scheme. Around 260 million euros were pledged by Spain, Italy, Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands to curb deforestation in the Amazon.

During COP28, the governor of Amapá met with the ambassadors of Norway and Finland and invited them to visit the state and maintain contact, in order to advance the implementation of opportunities discussed at the meeting, relating to the sphere of science, technology, innovation , environmental preservation and the Amazon Fund.
