Governor of the DF says that the federal government also failed on January 8

The acting governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (PP), says that agencies linked to the federal government also failed in the security scheme to contain the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8, according to an interview given to the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. Paulo published this Thursday (9).

According to Celina Leão, there was a “blackout” in public security due to failures in bodies such as the Institutional Security Office (GSI), the Planalto Palace and the intelligence of other Powers. “The entire burden came on us,” she said.

“The Planalto Palace dismissed everyone. The doors [foram] open. This is not the responsibility of the Military Police. Even with all the vandalism and the breakdown that happened, it was the Military Police that restored the Powers”, says the governor, citing that 51 PM-DF agents were injured in the containment of the demonstrators.

In the interview, Celina Leão defended the removed governor, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), that “a situation like that would never cross his mind. So he was misinformed throughout the whole process that was going on.”

For her, there was indeed a “political malaise” due to the return of former minister Anderson Torres to the GDF public security secretary, but that Ibaneis believed in the “good faith” of his former secretary to accept him back in charge. “Anderson was a good secretary, he did good deeds here in the government, then he became a minister”, she said.

On the same day of the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers, Torres was dismissed by Ibaneis and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) decreed federal intervention in public security in the DF. In the action’s final report, presented on the 27th, the intervenor Ricardo Cappelli pointed out that there was an “operational failure” in the conduct of the works.

Creating a National Guard is not a consensus, says governor

Celina Leão also stated that the creation of a National Guard to protect federal public buildings in Brasília, a measure that is part of a Ministry of Justice package announced shortly after the acts, is not a consensus among the authorities.

For her, the PM-DF is capable of continuing to protect the Union’s assets. “The Military Police have never been absent here in the Federal District. The Military Police have already been here in impeachments, they were here on September 7th. Never missed. Now, it also needs intelligence support, which I think is where the problem occurred at the Security Secretariat”, she points out.

The governor also stated that she believes that Ibaneis Rocha should return to office within 90 days, due to the progress of investigations. And she ruled out the possibility of her and the ousted governor’s impeachment motion moving forward in the District Chamber.
