The accusation is of abuse of political and economic power
The Regional Electoral Court of Roraima (TRE-RR) decided, on Monday (22), by 5 to 2, to revoke Governor Antonio Denarium’s mandate for the third time. The cause: abuse of political and economic power. He was sentenced to eight years of ineligibility.
This time, the mandate of the vice-governor, Edilson Damião, was also revoked. The two remain in office while they appeal the decision. The case must be raised for analysis by the Superior Electoral Court.
The rapporteur, judge Tânia Vasconcelos, agreed in part with the opinion of the Public Electoral Ministry (MPE), according to which Denarium committed irregularities by boosting the Cesta da Família and Morar Melhor programs in the year in which he ran for re-election.
She stated that the governor “practiced conduct contrary to the law with a special misuse of purpose, using the state structure and large resources with the purpose of interfering in the electoral election”.
Flagrant infraction
“The analysis undertaken reveals that in the 2022 election year the expenditure of resources on electoral measures and in flagrant violation of electoral legislation may have exceeded the level of R$90 million”, added the rapporteur.
According to the judge’s vote, the amount refers to the implementation of the Morar Melhor program, with almost R$70 million transferred to municipalities. In parallel, expenses for the first four months of the Cesta da Família program were R$11 million.
In a note sent to the press, Denarium said that he respects the court decision and is confident that his situation will be reversed at a higher court, “clarifying all the issues raised and presenting the necessary counterpoints”.
