Governor of AM wants to beat Amazon for the brand name

The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (União-AM), intends to question the retail giant Amazon for using the state’s name in the brand. He wants to have a meeting with company representatives to establish “partnerships” – and raise resources.

“Amazon uses the name of the Amazon, uses the name of the Amazon. How much do we get for this? We want to know, this is one of the questions we will ask at COP28”, he said on Wednesday (29).

Lima will participate in COP28 in Dubai, which starts this Thursday (30), to launch the Amazon 2030 project, an initiative by Brazilian researchers to “develop a sustainable development plan for the Brazilian Amazon”. The state government launched, also this Thursday (30), a campaign “in search of investments and opportunities for the people of the Amazon”.

The video, published on social media, provokes billionaire Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon, due to the correlation with the name of the state and the Amazon River, which gave rise to the brand created 29 years ago. At the time, the businessman found the name in the dictionary under the letter A, which could generate a position at the top of the Google search engine, which used the alphabetical format to present search results.

The name Amazon also caught Bezos’ attention due to its meaning of something “exotic and different”, which is what he envisioned for the company’s future.

In the video in which he provokes Bezos, the Amazon rainforest presents itself as a persona, who tells the billionaire that they both have “a lot in common”. Biome says that he has seen her from space, from a rocket and from a helicopter, but that he doesn’t “really know her”.

“You distribute millions of products and have the largest logistics park in the world. I produce clean air for the entire planet and have the greatest biodiversity on Earth. If your company stopped, Jeff, a lot of things would be delayed. And if I stopped, the weather would get hotter. If your company is the most valuable of all, my value is incalculable”, says the forest persona in the video.

Soon after, the provocation is more direct and says “since you use my name and I never gained anything from it, come here and get to know me up close, Jeff. People live under my trees and, without taking care of them, it is impossible to take care of myself.” “Come down here, Jeff. The Amazon is calling you,” he added.

The Amazon branch in Brazil has not yet commented on the provocation by Wilson Lima and the government of Amazonas. According to the company’s fiscal reports, global net profit reached US$9.9 billion in the third quarter of this year compared to last year, when it reached US$1.1 billion (see in full). The amount for Brazil was not disclosed by Amazon.

If the governor’s requested “partnership” with Amazon prospers, it will set a precedent for other neighboring countries covered by the Amazon rainforest to also seek relations with the retail giant. In addition to Brazil, the forest is also present in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Venezuela, Suriname and part of the territory of French Guiana, according to WWF.
