Governor believes that license for research on the Equatorial Margin paves the way for studies of oil exploration in Amapá – News of Brazil

The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) granted Petrobras, last Friday, September 29, the first environmental license to drill wells with the purpose of researching production capacity in the Equatorial Margin, in the segment of the Potiguar Basin, in Rio Grande do Norte.
With the release, governor Clécio Luís believes that Amapá could be one of the next recipients of the license for feasibility studies on oil and natural gas production on the state’s coast.
“We are committed to sustainable development and want to see progress in Amapá and throughout the Amazon. Ibama needs to have a more inclusive look at our region, they cannot deny us the right to carry out the study to research the potential for oil and natural gas production on the coast of Amapá, so that it can be explored, with all safety and sustainability rules . I emphasize the importance of the impact that this activity can bring to the economy and the lives of the population of Amapá”emphasized the governor.
A thought also shared by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, who supports the initiative on the banks of Amapá and highlights the estimated reserves that could generate around 2 billion barrels of oil, with enormous potential to develop the Northeast and North regions .
“I am sure that Ibama technicians will now be able to dedicate themselves, even more diligently than they have already done, to advance the studies of the necessary conditions for research on the Equatorial Margin on the coast of Amapá”said the minister.
The state’s federal and state benches and the Legal Amazon Interstate Consortium, formed by the governors of Pará, Maranhão, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Acre, Amazonas and Roraima, in addition to Amapá, also support the initiative in the region.
First request denied
On May 17th of this year, the president of Ibama, Rodrigo Agostinho, denied licensing for the research. The license requested by Petrobras for Maritime Drilling Activity in the FZA-M-59 block seeks to find out whether or not there is the presence of oil and gas on the coast of Amapá.
Petrobras is awaiting authorization to carry out the emergency simulation in the Amazon region on the equatorial margin of Amapá, where it believes there is great potential for discovering commercial oil reserves. This approval would be an initial step towards further drilling in the area.
