The Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican) government considers formal approval by municipalities of new contracts with Sabesp to be unnecessary for the privatization of the company to take place.
“Legally it is not necessary, although we know that several cities will want to approve a municipal law in their Chambers”, says the state secretary of Environment and Infrastructure, Natália Resende, responsible for carrying out privatization during the Tarcísio administration.
The understanding is different from what other political actors defend. In the capital, for example, there is an assessment that it is necessary to consolidate the sale of the company next year, since a possible victory by Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) could derail the privatization. A possible management of the psolista would not agree to approve a new contract with the company.
Resende stated that the São Paulo government is making efforts to talk to the 370 municipalities in the states whose cities are supplied by Sabesp.
Last Friday (29), a letter to each affected mayor was sent with a summary of the project and basic commitments. The main ones are to bring forward the goal of universalizing the water and sewage system by four years, to 2029, with the inclusion of an additional 1 million homes to the sanitation network.
