Government of AM signs partnership to build a Escola da Floresta unit in Carauari

A letter of intent was signed with the private sector to build another unit of the project that aims to promote socio-environmental education.

Manaus (AM) – The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (UB), participated in a meeting, this Monday (4), with businesspeople who are going to implement a management project in the Carauari region (788 kilometers from Manaus) and who intend to make the donation of US$ 1.5 million, equivalent to R$ 7.4 million, for the construction of a new unit of the Escola da Floresta project. The signing of the letter of intent is the result of the search for national and international partnerships to expand the reach of the project.

According to Wilson Lima, the letter signed with businesspeople representing the Brazilian company BR ARBO Gestão Florestal SA and the Italian GIBBI SRL, will boost the Amazonas Government’s project to promote socio-environmental education in state conservation units.

“We are very happy to work together to carry out this project and for choosing Amazonas to make this investment, a state where we are creating many opportunities to attract this type of partnership”,

highlighted Wilson Lima.

Participating in the meeting, in addition to company representatives, were state secretaries Arlete Mendonça (Education), Eduardo Taveira (Environment) and Flávio Antony (Civil House); in addition to the director-president of the Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam), Juliano Valente.

The companies’ decision to invest in the construction and acquisition of equipment and furniture for another Forest School – Sustainable Practices is in line with the Mejuruá Project, implemented by them and which foresees positive and significant environmental and social effects for local communities with social investments of US$40 million, including the State Government’s sustainable education unit, through a project to generate carbon credits.

The first unit of the project is built by the State with its own resources in the Uatumã Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), in São Sebastião do Uatumã (247 kilometers from Manaus). Escola da Floresta is a project coordinated by the State Department of Education and works at RDS Uatumã began in 2023 and are already 80% complete.

Two other schools are also planned in the project: one in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Caverna do Maroaga, in the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo (117 kilometers from the capital), and another in the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) Piagaçu Purus, in Beruri (173 kilometers from Manaus).

Escola da Floresta is part of the Educa+Amazonas Program, launched in 2021 by governor Wilson Lima, and seeks to expand, in the state network, the look at Environmental Education based on socio-environmental sustainability models, with the development of appropriate technologies. The objective is to transform teaching units into spaces of democratic management, respecting sociocultural diversity and human rights.
