Government is studying the application of Brazilian law in the case of Vinicius Jr. – 05/22/2023 – Sport

The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino (PSB), said this Monday (22) that the country is considering taking action in the case of racism against Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior, if the Spanish government does not adopt measures.

The statements were made during a Lide event, in the capital of São Paulo, with the presence of Defense Minister José Mucio and former governor João Doria.

“We are studying the possibility of a principle called extraterritoriality, Penal Code provides that in some exceptional situations it is possible that in the case of crimes against Brazilians even abroad there is application of Brazilian law. This is an extreme remedy, of course, but it can work, may be necessary,” he said.

Dino pondered, however, that this would be a last alternative. “It’s not something we’re going to do right away, but it’s a study we’re doing for the eventuality, which we don’t believe, of an omission by the Spanish authorities.”

This Sunday (21), the Brazilian player was expelled after a confusion triggered by racist insults against him by Valencia fans. The teams faced each other at the Mestalla stadium, for the 35th round of the Spanish Championship – the team from the capital was defeated by 1-0.

In a message on social networks after the game, the striker stated that racism “is normal” in La Liga and signaled that he could leave Spain as a result of these episodes. In a statement, the organization said it had requested the images to investigate “alleged racist insults directed at Vinicius Jr.”.
