Government goes to conference on people with disabilities – 06/12/2023 – Panel

The national secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the Ministry of Human Rights, Ana Paula Feminella, participates in the 16th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP16) at the UN (United Nations), in New York.

The event started this Monday (12) and runs until Friday (16).

The convention was drawn up at the UN in 2006, and the countries that sign it are committed to promoting and protecting the human rights of people with disabilities. In Brazil, the document was enacted in 2009.

The event will have three main axes: how to harmonize national policies and strategies with the convention, its achievements and its challenges. Among the subthemes, one of the highlights is the debate on guaranteeing equal access and accessibility to sexual and reproductive health services. The objective is to promote the inclusion and autonomy of these people, guaranteeing access to adequate information and services.

Another highlight is digital accessibility, seeking to raise awareness that, with technological advances, digital platforms need to be accessible and inclusive.

Feminella will also participate in a bilateral meeting with the US Special Counsel for the International Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Sara Minkara.

She will also make a speech on one of the panels she will participate in at the UN. The secretary must highlight a “guilty interruption” in the “emblematic trajectory” of Brazil in defense of human rights seven years ago, when the government of Dilma Rousseff (PT) ended.

“We believe that it is with us, with people with disabilities, that life will improve under an emancipatory, democratic, participatory, diverse and plural political culture”, he will defend.
