The Ministry of Justice and Public Security launches this Tuesday (31) a channel for journalists to report attacks recorded during the exercise of their profession, especially those from independent outlets, which have less legal support than those from larger journalistic companies.

There will be a specific area on the department’s website, says the national secretary of Justice, Augusto Botelho. The records will be received by the Violence Observatory against Journalists and Social Communicators, coordinated by the National Secretariat of Justice.

“The person will fill out some data, similar to a police report. And the ministry’s website will forward it directly to the police station responsible for the area”, says Botelho.

According to him, the idea is to replicate successful initiatives after the coup acts of January 8 and attacks on schools — in both cases, the Ministry of Justice provided a specific reporting channel.

Botelho says there will be a focus on journalists from independent outlets. “Journalists, communicators, radio broadcasters from cities in the interior suffer a lot of violence and are often helpless. So the function of the reporting channel is also for all communicators to have a quick response.”

The Observatory handles complaints based on five groups: Race and Diversity; Gender Violence; Judicial Harassment; Digital Attacks and Protection Protocol and Procedural Paths and Legal Protocols.
