The Government of Amapá started negotiations with the company EllaLink, owner of the only intercontinental submarine fiber optic cable, which connects Latin America to Europe, with ultra-speed internet.
In the virtual meeting, with representatives of the company, the governor Clecio Luis spoke about the possibility of connecting Amapá to the system to guarantee technological development, expanding the quality and potential of providing virtual data in the state.
“It is the only cable that directly connects Europe to Brazil, through Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro, which will now connect with Salinas (Pará). And we want to take advantage of this link, which will reach Belém, to bring the cable to Macapá, Oiapoque and also French Guiana. With this, we will achieve a perfect technological ring in the region, which will provide security in our communications. It was the first meeting, we are starting negotiations and I hope to have news soon”pointed out the governor.
The EllaLink cable is 6 kilometers long and is anchored in the city of Sines, in Portugal, and Fortaleza, in Brazil. In operation since June 2021, it has the capacity to transmit 100 terabits per second, in addition to being the first high-capacity direct connection route connecting the country to the old continent, without passing through the United States.
The Secretary of State for Science and Technology (Setec), Edvan Barros, who also participated in the meeting via the internet, highlighted the importance of Amapá advancing in the technological area of virtual data.
“If the project comes to fruition, it will be a very important step for Amapá and for Brazil. The company informed us that it already has the whole project designed and ready to expand services to French Guiana, and expand connectivity to the North and Northeast of the country. We are very optimistic, because the state needs a lot of this progress “said Edvan Barros.
